Lahn Pushes Back on Residency Criticism, Shifts Focus to General Election Issues
Republican gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn used his first public campaign event since winning the June Republican primary to respond directly to criticism from Democratic opponent Rob Sand over where he lives, while outlining the issues he says will define his campaign through November.
Speaking at a town hall in Tama, Lahn addressed one of the central lines of attack from Sand’s campaign: Lahn’s travel between Iowa and Kansas, where his children live with his former wife.
Lahn, who was born in Sioux City, restored a home on family property near Belle Plaine in 2014 and returned to Iowa in 2023 while maintaining a residence in Kansas, said the criticism ignores the realities of his blended family.
“I have a blended family,” Lahn told attendees. “Some of the kids spend time in Kansas, I go back and forth, and my opponent has chosen this as the personal round of attacks to level against me even though he knows the truth.”
Lahn argued that Sand has focused on his residency because he wants to avoid discussing policy differences.
Defining the Campaign
Rather than dwelling on personal issues, Lahn said his campaign will remain centered on what he describes as Iowa’s most pressing challenges.
Among the priorities he highlighted were addressing consolidation in agriculture, improving Iowa’s water quality, investigating possible links between water quality and the state’s rising cancer rates, strengthening K-12 education, and putting “Iowa first.”
Those issues helped distinguish Lahn during the Republican primary, where he often departed from more traditional Republican campaign themes. “Everywhere I went, people would say, ‘This is a completely refreshing message to hear from a Republican,'” Lahn said.
He added that political consultants had warned him those issues would not be enough to win the GOP nomination. “I disagreed,” Lahn said. “June 2 showed that we can talk about the issues.”
Contrasting with Sand
Lahn also sought to define his Democratic opponent before the general election campaign intensifies.
Although Sand has frequently described himself as an independent-minded Democrat willing to work across party lines, Lahn argued that portrayal is inconsistent with Sand’s political record.
“He is not a moderate,” Lahn said, pointing to comments Sand made years ago while in college and arguing voters will ultimately see him as a traditional liberal Democrat.
“Authenticity matters,” Lahn said.
Sand Campaign Responds
Sand’s campaign dismissed Lahn’s criticism, emphasizing Sand’s statewide campaign schedule and detailed policy agenda.
Campaign spokeswoman Maddie Moher noted Sand is currently conducting another 99-county tour featuring public town halls where he takes unscripted questions from both voters and reporters.
She also renewed questions about Lahn’s residence and how much time he spends in Iowa.
A Competitive Race Takes Shape
The open-seat race was created by Gov. Kim Reynolds’ decision not to seek another term. Although Republicans have held the governor’s office since 2011, national election analysts have rated this year’s race as one of the country’s most competitive gubernatorial contests.
Sabato’s Crystal Ball, Cook Political Report, and Inside Elections currently rate the race as a toss-up. Friday’s event marked an important transition for Lahn, from introducing himself to Republican primary voters to making his case to a broader statewide electorate.
While residency questions are likely to remain part of the campaign, Lahn made clear he intends to focus his message on agriculture, education, water quality, healthcare, and what he believes are Iowa-specific issues affecting families across the state.
Whether that issue-focused approach can overcome Democratic attacks, and whether voters ultimately view the election through the lens of policy or personal credibility, may become one of the defining questions of Iowa’s 2026 governor’s race.
Our Take
Friday’s event offered a clearer picture of how Zach Lahn intends to campaign through the fall. Rather than moving toward more traditional national Republican themes, he continues to emphasize issues such as agriculture, water quality, cancer rates, and education, all subjects that received significant attention during the Republican primary.
At the same time, the exchange underscores an emerging contrast between the campaigns. Sand has focused considerable attention on Lahn’s residency and availability to Iowa voters, while Lahn argues the campaign should instead center on policy differences. Both approaches are likely to remain prominent as the candidates work to define each other before voters make their decision in November.
