Character and Integrity

Enduring principles that define a state

The Foundation of Trust, Responsibility, and Community

Character matters. In Iowa, people are raised to believe that a person’s character says more than titles, wealth, popularity, or politics ever can. Long before social media, political branding, or public relations campaigns, Iowans understood a simple truth. A person’s values are revealed by how they live, how they treat others, and whether they can be trusted to do the right thing.

Character is built through honesty, humility, responsibility, discipline, and integrity. It is reflected in keeping your word, admitting mistakes, working hard without demanding praise, and standing by your principles even when doing so is difficult.

These are not abstract ideals. They are practical expectations that shape communities and relationships every day.

Communities function because people trust one another. Families grow stronger because people accept responsibility. Businesses succeed because people act honestly and reliably. Schools, churches, organizations, and local governments depend upon integrity to maintain public trust.

Without character, trust breaks down. Without integrity, leadership loses legitimacy. Without accountability, communities weaken.

Character has never meant perfection. Every person makes mistakes. What matters is honesty, accountability, and the willingness to learn, improve, and do what is right moving forward.

In Iowa, integrity has traditionally meant telling the truth, keeping your promises, accepting responsibility, treating people fairly, respecting others, working hard, and acting with humility rather than arrogance.

These values are often taught quietly through family, faith, schools, mentors, coaches, neighbors, and community traditions. Character is revealed through ordinary actions repeated consistently over time.

Humility is also an important part of Iowa character. Iowans have traditionally respected people who work hard without bragging, help others without seeking attention, lead through service rather than ego, and remain grounded regardless of success or status.

Integrity means doing what is right even when nobody is watching. It means applying the same standards to ourselves that we expect from others. And it means understanding that actions matter more than slogans or appearances.

Strong communities depend on people who can be trusted to tell the truth, follow through on commitments, take responsibility, and place honesty above convenience or personal gain.

Character also requires courage. Not loudness. Not cruelty. Not domination.

Real courage means standing up for what is right, defending those who are vulnerable, admitting mistakes, speaking honestly, and maintaining integrity under pressure. These principles help create communities where people feel safe, respected, and connected to one another.

They build trust between neighbors, strengthen schools and workplaces, and encourage responsible leadership. And they remind future generations that values still matter.

Character and integrity are not old-fashioned ideas. They are the foundation of healthy communities, ethical leadership, and strong relationships. They always have been, and they always will be.
