Deere Settles Right-to-Repair Lawsuit, Giving Farmers Greater Access to Equipment Repairs

Deere allows customers to have the right to repair their equipment

FTC and Deere Settle Lawsuit Over Equipment Repair Limits

John Deere has agreed to settle a federal lawsuit that accused the company of limiting farmers’ ability to repair their own equipment, marking a significant victory for the national “right-to-repair” movement and many Iowa producers.

Under the proposed settlement announced July 8, Deere will provide farmers and independent repair shops with the same diagnostic tools, software, and repair information available to its authorized dealerships for the next 10 years. The company must also make new repair resources available to independent users once more than half of its dealers have access to them.

The agreement resolves a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission and five states, which alleged Deere unlawfully restricted repairs by requiring customers to rely on its authorized dealer network. Regulators argued the practice increased repair costs, delayed service during critical planting and harvest seasons, and reduced competition.

Deere did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement. The agreement still requires approval from a federal judge.

In a statement, the company said the settlement reinforces its longstanding efforts to improve customer access, transparency, and repair flexibility.

The settlement follows Deere’s separate agreement earlier this year to pay $99 million to resolve related private class-action litigation.

Why It Matters in Iowa

For Iowa farmers, equipment downtime can mean the difference between harvesting a crop at peak quality or losing valuable time during narrow planting and harvest windows.

Supporters of right-to-repair have long argued that modern agricultural equipment has become increasingly dependent on proprietary software and electronic diagnostics, making it difficult for owners and independent mechanics to perform repairs without manufacturer approval or specialized tools.

The settlement is intended to give farmers greater control over maintaining their own equipment while increasing competition among repair providers.

Our Take

This case is about more than fixing tractors.

For generations, farmers have repaired much of their own equipment or relied on trusted local mechanics to keep machinery operating when every hour matters. As farm equipment has become more sophisticated, software and electronic diagnostics have increasingly placed those repairs under the control of manufacturers.

John Deere’s settlement reflects a broader national conversation about ownership in the digital age. When someone purchases expensive equipment, what rights accompany that purchase? Should owners be free to repair it themselves, or should manufacturers control access to the tools needed to do so?

The agreement does not answer every question surrounding right-to-repair, but it moves the balance toward greater customer choice. For Iowa farmers, that could mean shorter repair delays, more service options, and greater independence during the busiest times of the farming season.
