Trump Endorses Randy Feenstra Days Before the Iowa Republican Primary

Trump throws a lifeline to Feenstra

Iowans continue to suffer as Trump confusion worsens the global economy.

Value of Endorsement Remains to Be Seen

President Donald Trump has endorsed U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra in Iowa’s Republican gubernatorial primary, giving the northwest Iowa congressman a significant boost just days before voters head to the polls on June 2.

In a May 29 post on Truth Social, Trump praised Feenstra as a “Highly Respected America First Congressman” and declared that he has his “Complete and Total Endorsement” for governor. “Randy is MAGA all the way!” Trump wrote.

Feenstra Honored and Humbled

Feenstra quickly embraced the endorsement, calling himself “honored and humbled” to receive the president’s support. “President Trump is the greatest president of my lifetime, and he has kept every promise he made to Iowans and the American people,” Feenstra said in a statement. He highlighted his work with Trump on border security, immigration enforcement, and tax policy.

Critical Timing

The endorsement comes at a critical moment in the Republican primary race. Feenstra entered the contest as the presumed frontrunner, backed by significant fundraising, strong name recognition, and support from several prominent Republican officials. However, the race has become increasingly competitive, particularly with businessman Zach Lahn gaining traction among some grassroots conservative voters.

Under Iowa Republican Party rules, a gubernatorial candidate must receive at least 35% of the vote to secure the nomination outright. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the nomination would be decided at a state convention by party delegates.

Mixed Picture

Recent polling has painted a mixed picture of the race. A poll conducted in April by Victory Enterprises, a Republican consulting firm associated with Feenstra’s campaign, showed him leading the field with 41% support. More recently, a poll conducted May 27-28 by JMC Analytics and Polling found Lahn narrowly leading Feenstra, 27% to 24%.

With independent polling limited and the race appearing fluid, Trump’s endorsement could prove influential among Republican voters who remain strongly supportive of the former president and his political movement.

Democrats Dismiss Endorsement’s Significance

Democrats were quick to dismiss the endorsement’s significance. Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart argued that Feenstra remains vulnerable despite Trump’s backing, describing the endorsement as a late effort to rescue a campaign that has struggled to unite all factions of the Republican base.

The endorsement also highlights Trump’s continuing influence over Iowa Republican politics. Even after carrying Iowa comfortably in three consecutive presidential elections, the former president remains a powerful force in Republican primaries, where his support can help shape voter perceptions and campaign momentum.

With only days remaining before the primary, the key question is whether Trump’s endorsement will be enough to help Feenstra clear the 35% threshold and avoid a convention fight, or whether the race remains fragmented enough to send the decision to party delegates.

Our Take

The timing of Trump’s endorsement is perhaps the most important part of this story.

If Feenstra were comfortably leading the field, there would have been little reason for Trump to intervene just days before the primary. Instead, the endorsement suggests that both Feenstra’s campaign and Trump allies view the race as competitive and potentially uncertain.

The endorsement also serves as a reminder of how central Trump remains to Republican politics in Iowa. While gubernatorial races traditionally focus on state issues such as education, taxes, healthcare, and economic development, Trump’s influence continues to shape Republican primaries and candidate positioning.

The June 2 results will provide an important test of whether Trump’s endorsement remains as powerful with Iowa Republican voters as it has been in previous election cycles.

If Feenstra wins comfortably, supporters will point to Trump’s backing as a decisive factor. If the race remains close or moves to a convention, questions will emerge about whether the endorsement arrived too late to change the trajectory of the campaign.
