The values that hold Iowa together

The Values That Built Iowa and the Questions We Face Today

Politics dominates the headlines. Campaigns. Polls. Elections. Political ads. Social media arguments. But beneath all that noise lies a more important question.

How do we see ourselves as Iowans?

For generations, Iowans have described themselves as honest, hardworking, neighborly, practical, and community minded. We have taken pride in our willingness to help others, tell the truth, keep our word, and place the common good above personal gain.

Whether those descriptions are entirely accurate is almost beside the point. They are the values many Iowans believe have traditionally defined who we are.

Which raises another question.

Are those values still guiding us today?

That question inspired the creation of Iowa411’s new Iowa Values section.

The purpose of these pages is not to promote a political party, candidate, or ideology. Instead, they explore the values many Iowans have long associated with our state and ask whether those values are being strengthened, challenged, or forgotten.

Across Iowa, people hold different political views. They vote for different candidates. They attend different churches, live in different communities, and often disagree with public policy.

Yet many still share a common belief in values such as honesty, responsibility, compassion, respect, community, faith, service, humility, and ethical leadership.

The Iowa Values pages are intended to explore those principles and examine how they apply to the challenges facing our state today.

Current pages include:

Character and Integrity

Community and Civic Responsibility

Faith, Humility, and Moral Responsibility

Respect and Human Dignity

Truth and Ethical Leadership

Additional pages will be added over time as we continue exploring the ideas and traditions that have shaped Iowa’s identity.

The pages are not intended to provide easy answers. Instead, they are designed to encourage reflection about questions like What does integrity look like in public life? What responsibilities do we owe our neighbors and communities? How should faith influence the way we treat others? Why does truth matter in a democratic society? What does respectful disagreement look like in an age of constant political conflict?

These are not Republican questions. They are not Democratic questions. They are Iowa questions.

We believe politics should ultimately be measured not only by who wins elections, but by whether our leaders, institutions, communities, and citizens reflect the values we claim to hold.

The Iowa Values section is an invitation to join that conversation. Because before we decide where Iowa is going, we should first remember who we are. And perhaps ask ourselves whether we are still living up to the Iowa we say we believe in.
