Former Iowa Educators Accuse Hinson of Failing to Demonstrate “Decency”

More than 60 former Iowa educators gathered at the Iowa State Capitol on Saturday to publicly criticize U.S. Senate candidate and current U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson, arguing that her policies and voting record fail to reflect the values of “honesty, integrity, kindness, compassion, and decency.”

The event, organized by the newly formed grassroots organization Iowans for Decency, featured retired teachers, former administrators, farmers, business owners, students, and community members from across Iowa. Organizers described the gathering as a tribute to educators and democratic values rather than a traditional political rally.

A letter to Hinson penned by more than 60 educators

Participants read portions of a letter signed by more than 60 former educators, many of whom taught in West Des Moines schools while Hinson was a student there. The letter expressed disappointment with Hinson’s support for policies they say harm working families, rural communities, public health, and democratic institutions.

Concerns about decency, civic responsibility, tax cuts for the wealthy

Retired teacher Nick Nelsen said educators felt compelled to speak out because they spent their careers teaching students the importance of decency and civic responsibility. Speakers criticized Hinson for supporting tax cuts benefiting wealthy Americans while backing policies they claim would reduce healthcare coverage, food assistance, and protections for rural hospitals.

Criticism of Trump policies not challenged by Hinson

Retired educator Kathy Meyer pointed to concerns over tariffs, environmental policy, and Iowa’s economic challenges, while former state education official Erika Cook said the debate now goes beyond party politics and centers on “right and wrong.”

Several speakers also criticized Hinson’s support for former President Donald Trump, federal spending decisions, and foreign policy positions. Organizers emphasized that their criticisms were policy-focused and grounded in research rather than personal attacks.

Oscar-nominated Iowa writer and filmmaker Peter Hedges, a founding member of the organization, spoke about the lasting influence of Iowa teachers and said the group was formed by former classmates, friends, and educators concerned about the future of Iowa and the country.

According to organizers, Iowans for Decency plans to continue engaging voters ahead of the election by promoting what members describe as pro-democracy values rooted in integrity, truth-telling, and civic responsibility. The organization is not endorsed by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

The group invites Iowans to read the educators’ letter, review supporting documentation, and learn more about with Iowans for Decency.
