News Haiku: Dave Sires Approaches the Vote with Iowa Common Sense, asking “Why Now?”

Could we have more than four days

Taxpayer money.

Kim wants to rush it through now.

Russia questions wait.

What happened?

Republican state Sen. Dave Sires of Cedar Falls says he will vote no on the steel-mill incentive legislation when lawmakers meet in special session today.

Does he oppose the steel mill?

No. Sires says he supports bringing new investment, jobs and opportunity to Iowa. His objection is to the process.

What’s the problem?

The $15 billion project was announced Monday. By Friday, legislators are being asked to act on a state incentive package potentially worth $1.36 billion over ten years. The package includes a $1.145 billion investment tax credit, $154.35 million in sales-tax refunds and a $60.5 million withholding-tax credit. A local property-tax exemption remains to be determined.

What does Sires want?

More time for legislators to examine the proposal, more answers about the deal and a meaningful opportunity for Iowans to weigh in.

His point?

“But the process also matters.” Sires said there has been too little time for public input and too little opportunity to examine a commitment of this magnitude.

Why does it matter?

Supporting economic development and demanding due diligence aren’t contradictory positions. A project involving potentially $1.36 billion in state incentives deserves scrutiny proportional to the commitment being made.

That last sentence is where I think the piece should end. It captures Sires’ argument without turning the Haiku into either an endorsement of his vote or an argument against the steel mill.

News Haiku

News Haiku is Iowa411 news in miniature.

Each short read begins with a three-line haiku capturing the heart of the story, followed by just enough context to explain what happened, why it matters, and what Iowans should know.

It’s the news, without the novel.
