Mitchell Goes “All In” for Trump at the October 22 Sioux City Rally

Iowa’s 2nd District congressional candidate called Trump the greatest president in American history and praised his “contributions to humanity” as voters confront rising costs and an unpopular war.
Republican congressional candidate Joe Mitchell took presidential praise to an extraordinary level Thursday night, praising Trump’s proposed White House ballroom before presenting Donald Trump with a homemade “Man of the Century” framed award during a campaign rally at Sioux Gateway Airport last night.
Mitchell, who is running to represent Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, told the crowd that Trump deserved the Nobel Peace Prize and criticized the Nobel committee for failing to recognize him.
He then unveiled a framed certificate declaring Trump the “Man of the Century.” But Mitchell’s most sweeping praise went considerably further. “This man has done more for humanity and for America than any other president ever,” Mitchell declared.
He also thanked Trump for being “the greatest president we’ve ever had.” The presentation drew cheers from the crowd, providing one of the evening’s more unusual moments as Trump rallied Iowa Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
A Remarkable Tribute at a Difficult Time
Mitchell’s remarks came as Trump faces growing dissatisfaction among Iowa voters over the economy, rising fuel and grocery prices, and the continuing war with Iran.
A recent Iowa survey reported by Reuters found Trump’s approval rating at 31%, while 68% of respondents disapproved of his handling of the economy. The same reporting found that 42% of likely voters believed their financial circumstances had worsened.
Those concerns are particularly relevant in Iowa, where farmers are confronting unusually high diesel prices during harvest and consumers continue to struggle with household expenses.
During Thursday’s rally, Trump announced $150 million in federal support intended to increase domestic refining capacity and discussed a new diesel relief program for farmers. He also renewed his commitment to year-round sales of E15 ethanol, though his promises made during an earlier 2026 rally in Iowa went unfulfilled.
Trump argued that his administration’s economic and energy policies justified continued Republican control of Congress. Mitchell, meanwhile, offered an assessment of Trump’s presidency that extended well beyond those policy claims.
What Does ‘More for Humanity’ Mean?
Mitchell did not identify specific accomplishments to support his assertion that Trump has done more for humanity than any previous American president. He clearly was not aware of the millions of deaths in Africa from famine and disease due to the DOGE closure of USAID.
Or Trump’s collaboration with Elon Musk to slow down or stop satellite resources that Ukraine needs to protect its civilians from brutal attacks by Putin.
Mitchell’s Ability for Independent Judgment Questioned
Mitchell is entitled to admire Trump and support his policies. But someone seeking to represent Iowa in Congress should be willing to evaluate a president’s record critically, particularly when his decisions affect the lives and livelihoods of Iowans and people around the world.
Declaring Trump to be the greatest president in American history and crediting him with unparalleled contributions to humanity, without acknowledging the consequences of his administration’s policies, raises a legitimate question about Mitchell’s independence.
If elected, would Mitchell exercise his own judgment and hold the president accountable when necessary, or would his loyalty to Trump take precedence over his responsibility to the people of Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District?
