Nitenpyram Tablets Act Quickly to Kill Screwworm Larvae

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for generic Nitenpyram Tablets to treat New World screwworm infestations in dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

The authorization marks the first generic animal drug approved for emergency use against New World screwworm (NWS), a flesh-eating parasite that federal officials are working aggressively to contain following recent detections in Texas and New Mexico.

New World screwworm flies lay eggs in open wounds or mucous membranes. After hatching, the larvae burrow into living tissue, causing painful wounds and potentially severe health complications in livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans.

According to the FDA, Nitenpyram works rapidly and can kill most screwworm larvae within hours of administration. Pet owners are instructed to administer a second dose six hours after the first treatment. Because the medication’s effects are short-lived, it does not prevent future infestations or reinfestation.

Federal officials emphasized that veterinary care may still be necessary after treatment. Veterinarians may need to remove remaining larvae and provide wound care to reduce the risk of infection and further tissue damage.

The FDA stated that available scientific evidence supports a reasonable belief that the treatment may be effective against New World screwworm infestations and that the potential benefits outweigh known and potential risks.

The authorization applies to dogs and cats that are at least four weeks old and weigh at least two pounds.

Nitenpyram Tablets are available over the counter in two dosage strengths and are manufactured by Felix Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd.

The authorization is the latest federal action aimed at slowing the spread of New World screwworm in the United States. Federal officials report that the FDA has now issued ten Emergency Use Authorizations and three conditional approvals involving treatments designed to combat the parasite.

Why It Matters

While no New World screwworm cases have been detected in Iowa, state livestock producers, veterinarians, and pet owners continue to monitor developments closely.

The parasite poses a significant threat to cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pets, wildlife, and other warm-blooded animals. Agricultural officials have warned that a widespread outbreak could have serious animal health and economic consequences.

Recent detections in Texas and New Mexico have prompted increased surveillance, fly trapping, animal inspections, and preparation for sterile insect release programs aimed at preventing further spread.

For pet owners, the FDA’s authorization provides an additional treatment option should New World screwworm infestations occur in affected areas.
