Four Days After Johnson Campaigns for Miller-Meeks, GOP Congressional PAC Cuts Funding
The House speaker appeared with the Iowa Republican on Friday. By Tuesday, a major political organization aligned with his leadership was redirecting planned campaign spending elsewhere.
On Friday, October 9, House Speaker Mike Johnson traveled to Davenport, Iowa, to campaign for Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks.
Four days later, on October 13, The New York Times reported that the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), a major Republican super PAC endorsed by Johnson and House Republican leadership, was withdrawing planned advertising support from Miller-Meeks’s reelection campaign.
The timing is striking.
From stumping to withdrawing financial support
Johnson’s Friday appearance was a public demonstration of support for the Iowa congresswoman. Tuesday’s news revealed that one of the Republican Party’s most important outside spending organizations was directing advertising resources away from her race.
Miller-Meeks and New Jersey Republican Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. were the first Republican House incumbents identified in the report as losing planned advertising support from the major GOP groups.
Johnson’s close ties with the Congressional Leadership Fund
The Congressional Leadership Fund is closely associated with House Republican leadership. Johnson has publicly endorsed the organization and supported its fundraising efforts, although CLF operates independently and makes its own spending decisions.
The reported withdrawal does not establish that Johnson personally directed the decision, nor does the October 13 publication date establish exactly when the advertising commitments were canceled.
An unusual contrast and timing
But the sequence presents an unusual contrast. On Friday, the Republican House speaker was campaigning for Miller-Meeks in Iowa. By Tuesday, a super PAC aligned with his leadership was publicly reported to be moving planned advertising resources to other congressional races.
With Election Day just three weeks away, that change in spending priorities is significant news for Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.
